Lab Rats

Lab rats

We've also got our very own volunteer Lab Rats; an affectionate term for a band of keen young volunteers who'll be on hand at Darlington Experiment 2.0 events to help people upload their films to the internet. Drawn from local schools, the youngsters will have their own special Lab coats emblazoned with the DX2 logo. They'll also be answering questions from anyone who's having problems getting started.

Tagging

Name tag

In order to make it easy for your videos, photos and tweets to be found, you should get used to the practice of tagging. A tag is a single word which helps categorise or describe your creations. If for instance, you were to visit the British Superbikes 2009 at Croft Circuit you'd use tags such as 'british superbikes race croft circuit'.

Tags can also be used to help make something part of a group or a trend. On Twitter people will prefix their tweets with one or more 'hashtags', which are recognisable single words starting in a # symbol that can be used to designate that this particular tweet is about a certain topic. The Darlington Experiment 2.0 for instance uses the hashtag '#dx2'

To make sure your video, photo or tweet gets onto the TubeTrain, you should use the following tags in conjunction with your usual tags:

  • YouTube and Flickr - dx2 darlington experiment
  • Twitter - #dx2

Remember, these are in addition to any other tags you can think of!

Twitter

If you're a fan of 'short and to the point' then you'll love Twitter! While it's surrounded by buzz-words like 'microblogging', all it really amounts to is a website where you're given 140 characters in which to say whatever it is you wish to say at that moment. A massive social network has grown out of this simple concept, and now even plants are tweeting!
